■ Michael P. Lischke, an administrator and educator at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, has been inducted as a fellow in the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. He is the director of Northwest AHEC, the executive director of the Office of Continuing Medical Education, an assistant professor of family and community medicine, an adjunct faculty member of the Maya Angelou Center for Health Equity, and an associate faculty member at the Women's Health Center of Excellence.

■ Wake Forest University faculty members Mark Welker and Dilip Kondepudi have been elected as 2008 Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Welker, the William L. Poteat Professor of Chemistry and associate provost for faculty affairs, was elected for his contributions to the field of organometallic chemistry. He joined the Wake Forest faculty in 1987 and served as associate provost for research from 2003 to July, when he became associate provost for faculty affairs. Kondepudi, the Thurman D. Kitchin Professor of Chemistry, was elected for his contributions to the field of non-equilibrium chemistry and as a co-author of the book Modern Thermodynamics. He joined the Wake Forest faculty in 1987.

■ Michael Rieker, the director of the nurse anesthesia program at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, has been elected secretary-treasurer of the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists. He received a bachelor of science in nursing degree at Pennsylvania State University and completed a master of science in nurse anesthesia and doctorate of nursing practice at Rush University.

■ Mike Crouch, the maintenance man at Magnolia Creek Assisted Living and Memory Care in Winston-Salem has been honored as the Maintenance Man of the Year by Third Street Management for his hard work and dedication. Magnolia Creek cares for traditional assisted-living residents, as well as Alzheimer's patients in their memory-care wing. Crouch has been its maintenance man for four years.

■ Victoria Scott has bought a professional-image consulting company operated by Diane Harris in Winston-Salem. She has named her new business Image by Victoria. She will provide the same consulting services offered by Harris. Scott has been trained in various aspects of image, including television consulting, clothing, style and makeup design. She has taken over Harris' makeup line and is developing new products, lines and kits. Harris is a 30-year industry veteran and is retiring from the business. She spent the past 20 years providing image-consulting services to politicians, television anchor people and business leaders in such markets as New York, Washington, San Francisco and Atlanta.

■ Leigh Huffman has opened Basicleigh Marketing at 3615 Grandway Circle in Greensboro. A marketing and communications company, it specializes in offering positioned external support services for companies' in-house promotional efforts.

■ Design Professionals of North Carolina has honored Brian D. Casey, the president and chief executive of the High Point Market Authority for outstanding contributions to the organization. Casey spoke to the Senate Finance Committee in Raleigh this year on behalf of interior designers throughout North Carolina.

Interior designers in North Carolina mounted a campaign of lobbying starting in late 2007 to persuade legislators to prohibit state taxation of interior-design services. The General Assembly approved a law to prohibit tax on these services during the 2008 session. Designers Susan Carson, the principal of Susan Carson Associates Inc., and Emmy Williams, the principle of Interior Solutions Inc., both based in Winston-Salem, were recently honored with the American Society of Interior Design Carolinas Service Award for their leadership efforts in the campaign.

■ Modern Body Shop at 1020 Southpark Blvd. in Winston-Salem has been named an AAA Approved Auto Repair center, according to AAA Carolinas. The certification means that Modern Body Shop has met AAA's strict criteria for technician certification and customer satisfaction. AAA-approved shops also offer a wide range of automotive services and use high-tech equipment.

■ State Rep. Dale Folwell, R-Forsyth, recently spoke at the second annual Conference on Managing Retiree Healthcare sponsored by the World Research Group. He discussed the plight of the N.C. State Health Plan. Folwell is the Republican joint caucus leader in the N.C. House of Representatives from District 74, which includes Forsyth County, and is a vice chairman of the House Pensions and Retirement Committee.

■ Greensboro Investment Homes LLC, a franchise in Greensboro for HomeVestors of America, was recently honored at the national HomeVestors convention in Las Vegas. HomeVestors specializes in buying, fixing up and selling single-family residences across the country. Nick Holliday and Matt MacLanders of Greensboro Investment Homes received the Rising Star Award for one year of progressive growth.

■ The National Academy of Arts and Sciences' Midsouth Region has nominated Celebrating North America's Railways for nine Emmy Awards. The show, which is being shown on PBS stations nationwide, is produced by Wide Eye Productions of Winston-Salem and is the latest in the Great Scenic Railway Journeys series. "Celebrating North America's Steam Railways" was nominated in the categories of historic/cultural program/special; director/program (non-news); editor/program (non-news); lighting; and photography/program (non-news). In the new advanced-media division for Web-based media, a promotional spot for the show was nominated in the commercial; photographer; video editor; and writer/producer categories.

■ These engineering companies recently received grand awards from the American Council of Engineering Companies of North Carolina: Stantec in Winston-Salem for "LaunchPad" Commercial Laboratory Incubator at Piedmont Triad Research Park in Winston-Salem; and Trigon/Kleinfelder Inc. in Greensboro for Innovative Clean-up of Chlorinated Solvents in Groundwater, Fairchild Industrial Products in Winston-Salem. Honors awards went to Arcadis in Greensboro and Hazen and Sawyer in Greensboro for North Buffalo Creek Sanitary Sewer Replacement in Greensboro; Arcadis for Stormwater Capital Improvements Program in High Point; ECS Carolinas LLP, Greensboro Office for Gateway at Old Salem -- Brownfields Redevelopment in Winston-Salem and for Underpinning and Shoring System for RF Micro Devices Plant No. 4 in Greensboro; S&ME Inc. in Greensboro for Web-based Asbestos Management System -- UNC Greensboro in Greensboro.
