It was a chance meeting in the Bowman Gray Stadium field house but I ran into baseball coach Kevin Ritsche one day.
He is looking forward to the spring, mainly because he’ll have more scholarship players than last season. Technically, all of his players were walkons last season as the program was resurrected but he said the Rams have some solid recruits and didn’t lose a lot off last year’s CIAA championship team.
The Rams schedule is out but as usual they are scrambling to find a place to play their home games. There will be a few at BB&T Ballpark and maybe a few at Wake Forest if they can work out the details.
Not having their own place to play is what happened last season also but they did OK anyway and won the school’s first conference baseball title.
The Rams baseball team is also doing their part in the community, according to a release from the school’s sports information department.
Last month the baseball team assisted the Fur Ever Friends of North Carolina Adoption and Outreach Program by building cat shelters.
“Any time that we can assist a local organization in improving the welfare of the community it becomes one of our top priorities,” Ritsche said in the release. “…(They) enjoyed themselves and are always happy to give back.”
The shelters were built as a means to provide for stray animals in need.
